The Course
9 of the Best
The holes at Cooktown Golf Club follow the natural contours of the dunes and have been laid out with very little earthmoving and as a result we have have a sand based course that very much follows mother nature’s lead.
Here the flat level stance is a treasured bonus as you are much more likely to have a up, down or side hill lie, so sharpen up on those skills, also the wind is a constant, so being able to play links style golf is a great advantage, blind tee or 2nd shots also feature on our layout with one example being the blind par-3 6th / 15th which measures 206 & 175 metres from the tips and features a left to right two-tiered narrow green.
Birdies here are extremely rare, the other good example is the 4th / 13th, a hard right dogleg measuring 312 & 337 metres respectively, this hole can be played 2 ways, 1 shot to the corner and a fairway wood or hybrid to the green or take on the corner, ride the wind and take a shot at a birdie or eagle, a high straight carry of 200+ metres can give you that chance.
The south easterly trade winds defend our course almost year round so being a good player in the wind is great start and whilst it’s a entertaining course to play there has been many a low marker walk away after a round confounded by the subtle difficulties our course possesses.
If you have difficulty playing in the wind please see our Pro Tips page.
